Plastic Surgery

Liposuction

LipoaspiraçãoThis is considered the most sought plastic surgery in the consulting rooms, both by men and by women. Its success is due to the fact that this is a procedure which sculpts the body, eliminating all the undesirable deposits of localised fat. It gives people a more attractive and harmonious silhouette.

Recommended: For removal of localised fat in areas such as the flanks, hips, back, thighs, pubis, arms and under the chin.

Procedure: Incisions are made in strategic locations, and a small pipe is inserted to remove the excess fat.

Scar: Scars are minimal, typically between 5 and 8 millimetres, and get hidden in the natural folds of the human body.

Type of Anaesthetic: Local with sedation, epidural or general, depending on the volume of fat to be removed.

Duration:
Between 1 and 3 hours, depending on the volume and also on the regions on which the liposuction is performed.

Time in Hospital: Can vary from a few hours to one day.

Important: The Brazilian Plastic Surgery Society recommends a removal of not more than 5% to 7% of the total body weight, as this is considered a safe percentage. Hence, in some cases there is a need for procedures in two different phases, not less than three months apart.

Doctor’s Word: For the result to be satisfactory, it is important that the skin shows good elasticity, in order to ensure appropriate retraction. It is also worth remembering that liposuction is not a method to lose weight, as its main purpose is that of remodelling the body contours in a harmonious manner;

Before the operation: All medical examinations as requested by the surgeon shall be carried out, and you must please tell your doctor about any medicine and other chemicals that you consume, everything from the Pill to antidepressants. At the moment of surgery, you shall be given an anaesthetic, and some medicines can change coagulation and lead to excessive bleeding. If you are taking medication based on acetylsalicylic acid, drugs for the treatment of influenza, appetite suppressants, ginseng or Ginkgo Biloba, stop use 14 days before surgery.

Skin Preparation:
Keeping the skin moist shall strengthen the results of the surgery. Invest in treatment that encourages oxygenisation, tonification and also the elimination of toxins. Lymphatic drainages, together with exfoliation and body moisturising, are excellent allies in this process.

After Surgery: Use the modelling belt together with the compression plaque for a period of 60 days, and compression socks for up to 8 days. Avoid sudden movements, especially in the first week. Choose light clothes that do not leave marks, as your skin shall be highly sensitive. Normally there is the occurrence of oedema (swelling) and purple patches which go away naturally after 21 days in most cases. Lymphatic Drainage is recommended after 4 days, as from the date of surgery, in order to reduce the swelling and the hardening, and also to offer well-being. Avoid the sun, as the sun acts on purple marks and also on recent scars, and may pigment the skin and leave a permanent mark. After the third day, there is no problem in getting some sun outside your home, but always using sun block of at least FPS 30. However, for longer exposure to the sun (beaches, sunbathes), it is recommended to wait at least 90 days.

Return to Activity: Between 3 and 5 days. The practice of exercise shall be resumed after 21 days, with light movements. For exercise of high impact, it is advisable to wait 60 days.
